In my role as a systems administrator and staff member at a nonprofit serving abused and neglected children, I've observed a significant shift from verbal to written communication over the years.
It's become clear that how we interpret written messages can be heavily influenced by our current emotional state, often leading to misunderstandings, arguments, and even hurtful exchanges.
Have you ever encountered a social media post that immediately rubbed you the wrong way, prompting you to draft a heated response only to think better of it seconds later? I've noticed a trend where some Santas are portrayed as nothing more than grumpy old men, embodying the stereotype of "Get Off My Lawn" types. However, upon reflection, many of us in this community do indeed fit that description. I've found myself deleting comments on my articles to prevent escalating text battles, whether it's debating the religious significance of Santa and the Easter Bunny or arguing about the color and origins of Santa's suit. While Santas are known for their strong opinions, we also symbolize peace, love, and joy, as well as Christianity, to many who follow us on social media.
Social media platforms like Facebook are no strangers to the misunderstandings caused by written communication. Here are some simple guidelines and tools I share with our staff and fellow Santas to communicate more effectively:
Check Yourself: Pause and assess your emotional state when reading something that irritates you.
Never Post in Anger: Avoid posting messages or texts when you're angry, remembering the image we represent.
Be Authentic: Share content that genuinely reflects your values and personality.
Fact-Check: Verify information before sharing to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Be Clear and Concise: Communicate your message clearly and succinctly.
Mindful Timing: Ensure your response is timely and relevant.
Show Compassion: Respond to posts with respect, portraying the best version of yourself.
Remember Who You Represent: We represent not only Santa or Christmas but also the Lord Jesus himself.
By adhering to these principles, we can foster more positive and respectful interactions on social media, embodying the spirit of goodwill and understanding that define the holiday season.
